Predicting bottom current deposition and erosion on the ocean floor

چکیده

Mapping sediment deposition and erosion by thermohaline ocean bottom currents is important for the development of infrastructure, future geo resources understanding sedimentology contourites abyssal wavefields. However, only a limited percentage (estimated 20%) floor has been mapped directly through seismic or sonar imaging. To better delineate where zones current exist, we develop prediction from numerical model solutions sedimentological measurements floor. This achieved integrating three types data, which include following: (1) shear stress run HYCOM model; (2) sedimentation rates lithospheric age thickness GlobSed Model; (3) measured extents deposits observations. Shear stresses inside outside allow us to quantify conditions that are conducive deposition. These then extrapolated displayed on 1/12° arcsecond resolution map world's oceans validated comparison with known, systems. Based our prediction, around 12% significant while 1% erosion. Most activity occurs impinge upon like continental slopes some areas plain. Deposition also occur constriction takes place as in straits seaways. Inland basins (i.e. seas) shelves mostly disconnected global-ocean conveyors and, therefore, have Mid-ocean ridges little due low supply.

Global Observations of Ocean-Bottom Subinertial Current Dissipation

Quadratic bottom boundary layer drag is a potentially significant source of energy dissipation in the deep ocean. This study presents a new estimate of the energy dissipated by this process, using results from the world’s largest archive of ocean current meter time series and focusing strongly upon the potential uncertainties in this calculation. Two methods are used, one based on a simple divi...

On Challenges in Predicting Bottom Water Transport in the Southern Ocean

Changes in the Southern Ocean lower-limb overturning circulation are analyzed using a set of climate models. In agreement with some recently developed theoretical models, it is found that the overturning can be strongly affected by winds. In particular, the simulated strengthening of large-scale southward transport in the abyss is explicitly driven by zonal wind stress. However, there is a cons...
